Power Flushing

What is a Power Flush?

A power flush is a professional procedure carried out by central heating engineers to eliminate sludge, rust, and other debris from your central heating system. It involves using a high-velocity flushing unit to push water through the boiler, pipes, and radiators, effectively dislodging and removing build-ups that can compromise system efficiency.

This process enhances the performance and lifespan of your boiler and heating system while reducing the risk of breakdowns. Regular maintenance, including power flushing, is key to keeping your system in optimal condition.

What Happens During a Power Flush and How Long Does It Take?

A specialized machine, often referred to as a “pumping station,” is used to extract dirty water and debris from the system while introducing clean water. Before starting, the engineer might add a chemical agent to break down accumulated sludge. The entire process typically takes several hours to a full day, depending on the system’s condition.

Step One: Flushing the System

Once the equipment is set up, the engineer will begin flushing the system in both directions, which usually takes about 90 minutes. Problematic areas, such as heavily contaminated radiators, will receive extra attention. In some cases, an ‘agitator’—a pad attached to a hammer-action drill—is used to dislodge stubborn sludge.

Step Two: Neutralizing and Balancing

After flushing out the debris, the engineer introduces a chemical neutralizer and thoroughly washes the system. They will then check the pH balance to ensure the system is not overly acidic, as high acidity can accelerate internal corrosion.

Step Three: Adding Inhibitor Fluid

To prevent future sludge build-up, the engineer adds an inhibitor fluid. This helps protect the system from corrosion and maintains its efficiency. Depending on the size and state of your central heating system, the entire power flushing process may take most of the day.
